Travel Agency in Siliguri: Pick The Right One For Sikkim, Darjeeling, Dooars & Bhutan

Almost every Himalayan holiday in India's eastern corner starts in Siliguri. You land at Bagdogra or step off a train at New Jalpaiguri (NJP), and within the hour you are sorting out a car, a hotel and, quite often, a permit. That is why the travel agency in Siliguri you pick shapes your trip more than the hotel you sleep in.

Search for one and you will find hundreds of listings promising the same things: customised packages, best prices, 24x7 support. This guide takes a different route. It explains what a good Siliguri operator actually does, what has changed on the ground in 2026, and the exact questions to ask before you pay anyone, including us.

Why Book With A Travel Agency Based In Siliguri?

Because several of the region's best experiences can only be arranged locally.

Siliguri is the junction for four very different trips: Sikkim, the Darjeeling and Kalimpong hills, the Dooars forests and Bhutan. Each runs on its own rules.

  • Permits go through registered agents. Indian visitors need a Protected Area Permit for Tsomgo Lake and Nathula, and it is processed in Gangtok through Sikkim Tourism-registered agencies. North Sikkim (Lachung, Yumthang, Lachen, Gurudongmar) works the same way.
  • Vehicle rules change at the state line. Permit routes in Sikkim are driven only by locally registered tour vehicles. A good agency plans that handover in Gangtok so you are not left negotiating on the roadside.
  • Roads change week to week. NH10, the main Siliguri-Gangtok road, closes for landslides and repairs several times in a bad year. Someone who tracks it daily reroutes you before you are stuck in a queue.
  • There is an office to walk into. If a hotel overbooks or a driver does not show, a local team can fix it the same day.

National booking portals are handy for comparing prices, but many of them resell the services of local operators. Booking directly removes a layer, and the person planning your trip is the person answering your call.

What a good Siliguri Travel Agency Should Manage For You:

A complete service covers more than a hotel and a car:

  • Pickup and drop at Bagdogra Airport, NJP or Siliguri Junction, timed to your flight or train
  • Hotels chosen for the route (a Gangtok hotel near MG Marg suits a Nathula day better than one far out of town)
  • The right vehicle for the group and the terrain, with a clear reserved or shared arrangement
  • Permit paperwork, with a checklist of IDs and photos sent before you travel
  • An itinerary that respects altitude, so you sleep at Lachen before attempting Gurudongmar rather than rushing up from Gangtok
  • Bhutan entry-permit guidance and the Jaigaon-Phuentsholing crossing
  • Train, flight and onward-travel help when plans change

What has changed in 2026: ground realities before you book

This is the part most agency pages skip, and the part that affects your trip most.

North Sikkim is open again, with a 4 pm cut-off:

The October 2023 glacial lake outburst flood wrecked roads across the Teesta valley, and North Sikkim has reopened in stages since. The Taram Chu stretch to Lachen was restored in February 2026, cut again in April, and reopened on 29 August 2026. Under a district order of 10 September 2026, tourist and light vehicles going to or coming back from Lachen and Lachung must cross the Toong check post by 4 pm, to avoid night driving.

For you, that means early starts and a buffer day. An honest agency will also tell you that such orders can change at short notice.

NH10 can close: ask for the Plan B:

NH10 runs about 174 km from Siliguri to Gangtok and follows the Teesta through slide-prone stretches. When it shuts, small vehicles are usually diverted through the Kalimpong hills via Lava and Gorubathan, which adds hours to the drive. In October 2026 the Centre sanctioned about ₹994 crore to rebuild the Rangpo-Ranipool section with tunnels and viaducts. That will help in future; for now, flexibility is still the rule.

Ask any agency one simple question: if NH10 closes on the day I land, which route do we take, and what does it add to my cost?

Bhutan from Siliguri: the fee in plain numbers:

Indian citizens do not need a visa for Bhutan. They need an entry permit (passport or voter ID) and must pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of Nu. 1,200 (₹1,200) per adult per night. Children aged 6 to under 12 pay half; children under 6 pay nothing.

So two adults and an eight-year-old on a five-night trip pay 5 × (1,200 + 1,200 + 600) = ₹15,000 in SDF alone, on top of the package. Since June 2026, visits of up to 24 hours to border towns such as Phuentsholing are exempt from SDF, as long as you stay within the town. That makes a day trip from Jaigaon easy.

If a Bhutan quote hides SDF inside one "all-inclusive" number, ask for it to be split out.

Nathula: Indians only, and not every day:

Nathula is open only to Indian nationals; foreign travellers can at most reach Tsomgo Lake with the right permit. The pass is usually closed to tourists on Mondays and Tuesdays, and snow can shut it on other days. Carry photo ID and passport-size photos; your agency submits the paperwork in Gangtok, normally a day ahead.

Where you can go from Siliguri, and for how long:

Use this as a starting point when you ask for quotes. Day counts are what we suggest for a comfortable pace, not minimums.

How to choose the best travel agency in Siliguri: 10 questions to ask

The best travel agency in Siliguri for you is the one that answers these clearly, in writing.

  1. Are you registered with Sikkim Tourism, or do you work with a registered partner in Gangtok for Nathula and North Sikkim permits?
  2. Will my invoice carry your trade licence and GST number?
  3. Can you send an itemised quote: hotel names, room type, meal plan, vehicle model, permit fees and SDF?
  4. Is the car reserved for us or shared? Which model, and who drives the permit sections?
  5. Will you confirm hotel names before I pay?
  6. What happens if NH10 or the North Sikkim road closes, and who pays for the extra night or longer route?
  7. What is your cancellation and refund policy, in writing?
  8. How much advance do you need, and will it go to a business account with a receipt?
  9. Who is my contact during the trip, and can I reach them in the evening?
  10. Where can I read recent customer reviews? Feedback from this season tells you more than ratings from five years ago.

Red flags that should make you walk away

  • A price far below every other quote. It usually means a shared car, a distant hotel or a missing permit.
  • Promises of a "guaranteed" Nathula or Gurudongmar visit. Weather, the army and the district administration decide that, not the agent.
  • Full payment demanded upfront, to a personal account.
  • Vague answers like "standard hotel" with no names.
  • Pressure to book "today only" during peak season.

How much does a tour package from Siliguri cost?

There is no single honest number, because cost moves with season, hotel class, vehicle and group size. What you can do is understand the five parts of any quote:

  1. Hotels, usually the biggest share
  2. Vehicle, charged per day or per route, reserved or shared
  3. Permits and entry fees, small but essential
  4. Bhutan SDF, if Bhutan is on the plan
  5. Service charge and taxes

Rates rise during Durga Puja, Diwali, Christmas-New Year and the May-June school holidays, so book these windows early. A group of four to six sharing one reserved car brings the per-person cost down sharply.

Shared or reserved? Shared jeeps run fixed routes between Siliguri, Gangtok and Darjeeling. They are cheap but leave on their own schedule and do not stop for photos. A reserved car lets you pause at Coronation Bridge, a tea estate or a viewpoint, and is the better choice for families and older travellers.

Frequently asked questions:

Which is the best travel agency in Siliguri?

The best one is the agency that fits your route and passes the checks above: a local office, registration for Sikkim permits, itemised quotes and recent reviews. Ask two or three agencies for quotes on the same itinerary and compare line by line.

Do I need a travel agent to visit Sikkim?

Not for Gangtok or Pelling. You do need a registered agency for Protected Area Permits to Tsomgo Lake, Nathula and North Sikkim, and the vehicle must be a locally registered tour vehicle.

Is North Sikkim open in 2026?

Yes. Lachung and Lachen are open, with the Lachen road restored on 29 August 2026. Vehicles must cross the Toong check post by 4 pm, so check the latest order before you travel.

How much does Bhutan cost Indians per day in fees?

The SDF is ₹1,200 per adult per night, ₹600 for children aged 6 to under 12, and nothing for under-6s. The entry permit itself is free.

Should I fly into Bagdogra or take a train to NJP?

Both serve Siliguri, and any local agency picks up from either. Choose by your starting city and schedule: Bagdogra for speed, NJP for overnight trains from Kolkata and beyond.
