Detailed Guide On Paragliding in Gangtok, Sikkim

Most people come to Gangtok for monasteries, momos, and the drive up to Tsomgo Lake. Then they see a bright canopy drifting over the ridge above Ranka, and the plan changes.

Paragliding in Gangtok, Sikkim is one of the few adventure activities in the Eastern Himalayas that needs No prior training is required. Guests should be able to run a few steps during take-off. You strap in with a certified pilot, take four running steps off a grassy shoulder, and the ground simply stops being there. Below you: terraced fields, tin roofs catching the sun, the Ranka valley folding away toward the Teesta.

At Himalayan Yatra, we've been arranging Sikkim holidays out of Siliguri since 2003, and we've slotted this flight into hundreds of family and honeymoon itineraries. This guide covers what it actually costs in 2026, when to fly, who can fly, and the parts of the experience the glossy brochures leave out.

Why Gangtok Became Sikkim's Paragliding Hub

Sikkim's capital sits at roughly 1,650 m on a long spur, with deep valleys dropping away on either side. That geography creates dependable thermals through the middle of the day and, just as importantly, a wide, flat, safe place to land — the stadium ground at Reshithang Sports Village near Ranka, about 40 minutes from MG Marg.

The state's Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has promoted the sport here since the early 2010s, including a dedicated paragliding festival. Today, tandem flying near Gangtok is run by licensed operators from two officially certified launch sites in East Sikkim. That's worth knowing: if someone offers you a flight from a random hillside, you are not looking at a certified operation.

The Two Certified Take-Off Points;

Baliman Dara — the Medium Fly launch

Baliman Dara sits near Reshithang village at roughly 1,300–1,400 m. It's the launch for the shorter flight, and it's the one families and nervous first-timers usually pick. You get the full sweep of Gangtok township, the ridgelines behind it, and the green bowl of the Ranka valley. Flight time is short and the landing comes quickly.

Bulbuley Dara — the High Fly launch

Bulbuley Dara is further up the same road from Reshithang, at about 2,200 m. This is the serious one. On a clear morning you're looking at Tashi View Point, the Taktse ridge, Bojoghari village and — when the haze cooperates — the snow wall of Kangchenjunga sitting on the horizon like a rumour. You'll be airborne long enough to actually settle, breathe, and stop gripping the harness.

Both flights land at the same stadium field, roughly 4 km below the higher launch.

Paragliding in Gangtok Cost (2026)

Flight type Take-off point Approx. altitude Air time  2026 Price Approx
Medium Fly Baliman Dara 1,300–1,400 m 5–10 minutes ₹2,500 – ₹3,500 per person
High Fly Bulbuley Dara 2,200 m 20–30 minutes ₹4,500 – ₹5,500 per person

*A few things that shape the final bill:

  • Video and photos are almost always charged separately — usually ₹500–₹1,000 for GoPro footage handed over on a memory card or shared digitally. Ask before you fly, not after.
  • Hotel pick-up and drop from central Gangtok is generally extra unless it's already built into your tour package.
  • Peak-season pricing (late April–May, October) sits at the upper end of these ranges. Shoulder weeks are cheaper and less crowded.
  • Prices move. Treat the table as a planning range and confirm the exact figure when you book.

Compared with paragliding rates in Himachal or Uttarakhand, Gangtok is competitively priced for the altitude and the Himalayan backdrop you get.

Best Time for Paragliding in Sikkim

Two windows work reliably:

March to early June — clear mornings, stable air, comfortable temperatures. Mid-April to May is the sweet spot, though it's also the busiest.

Mid-September to November — post-monsoon air is washed clean, and this is your strongest chance of seeing Kangchenjunga from the air. October is, in our experience, the single best month.

Avoid late June through August. Monsoon brings low cloud, wet launch slopes and gusty conditions, and flights are routinely grounded. December to February can be flyable on bright days, but cold air and shorter Flight timings depend on the weather, wind, and visibility.

Operators generally work between roughly 6:00 AM and 4:30 PM, but book the earliest slot you can get. Morning air is smoother, visibility is better, and if the weather turns, you still have the afternoon to reschedule.

What a Flight Day Actually Looks Like

Block out three to four hours, not thirty minutes.

You'll be picked up in Gangtok and driven toward Ranka, past the Banjhakri Falls area, where most booking offices are clustered. Paperwork and weigh-in happen there. Then comes a jeep ride up a rough hill road to the launch — 20 to 45 minutes depending on which site you're flying from.

At the top there's waiting. Pilots watch the wind, and they will not launch into conditions they don't like. When your turn comes, the briefing takes two minutes: don't sit down, keep running until your feet leave the ground, and let the pilot handle everything else.

The take-off is over before you've processed it. Landing is a gentle jog onto the stadium grass, or occasionally a controlled slide onto your backside — both are normal.

Who Can Fly: Eligibility & Safety Criteria

  • Weight: generally under 90 kg. Operators enforce this because it's an equipment limit, not a judgement.
  • Age: roughly 14 to 70 for tandem flights. Minors need a guardian's consent, seniors should be honest about mobility.
  • Health: skip it if you have heart conditions, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery, a serious back or knee problem, severe vertigo, or if you're pregnant. If in doubt, ask your doctor and then tell your pilot.
  • Food: eat something light, not nothing and not a full Sikkimese thali.
  • Motion sickness: if you're prone to it, choose the Medium Fly. Spiral descents in a longer flight are exactly what your inner ear will object to.

Sikkim's paragliding operations have been suspended in the past following an accident, and services resumed only after safety reviews. That history is a reason to book through licensed operators with maintained gear and logged pilots — not a reason to avoid the sport.

What to Wear and Carry

Closed sports shoes with grip, non-slip. Fitted clothing — loose kurtas and dupattas tangle in lines. A windproof layer, because 2,200 m at speed is genuinely cold even in May. Sunglasses that won't fly off, or none at all. Leave the phone in your bag; the pilot's camera handles the photos. Carry a government photo ID for the operator's records.

Fitting It Into a Sikkim Itinerary

The flight pairs naturally with the Ranka circuit — Banjhakri Falls, Ranka Monastery, Tashi View Point — so a single half-day covers it all. We usually schedule it on the morning after your Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La day, when you're already acclimatised and there's built-in flexibility if the weather says no.

Reaching Gangtok is straightforward: Bagdogra Airport and New Jalpaiguri railway station are both around 120–125 km away, a four-to-five-hour mountain drive. Our Sikkim and Darjeeling tours include transfers, permits and on-ground support, and any of them can be customised to include a flight slot.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rohit Rathod – Pune, Maharashtra

"I'm not usually into adventure sports, but paragliding in Gangtok turned out to be the highlight of our Sikkim trip. We booked the High Fly, and the views over the Ranka valley were unbelievable. The pilot explained everything before take-off, which helped calm my nerves. The flight itself felt much smoother than I expected. If you're visiting Gangtok for 3–4 days, I'd definitely recommend keeping one morning free for this."

⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ Aman Sharma – New Delhi

"The actual flying time was shorter than I had imagined, but the overall experience, including the drive to the launch site and the views, made it worthwhile. There was about a 30-minute wait because the pilots were checking wind conditions, which actually gave me more confidence in their safety standards. Wear proper sports shoes and carry a light jacket—the breeze at the take-off point is much colder than in Gangtok town."

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is paragliding in Gangtok safe?

Tandem flights are flown by trained, certified pilots using inspected equipment, and launches are cancelled the moment conditions look wrong. The main risk factors are weather and unlicensed operators — both avoidable.

Do I need any training or experience?

No. Every commercial flight near Gangtok is tandem. Your only job is to run when told to and enjoy the view.

Can I get a refund if my flight is cancelled?

Weather cancellations are usually rescheduled or refunded, but policies differ by operator. Confirm the cancellation terms in writing before paying.

Will I see Kangchenjunga?

Sometimes — mostly from the High Fly on clear October–November mornings. Nobody can promise it.

Should I book in advance?

Yes, especially in peak months. Slots are limited by pilot availability and daylight, and walk-ins are frequently turned away.

Which flight should a first-timer pick?

Medium Fly if you're unsure about heights or motion sickness. High Fly if you want the mountains, and you'll be glad you spent the extra.
